Over 770 species of birds are documented in the country both common and threatened species. Bhutan supports significant populations of at least 119 species of birds whose breeding ranges are restricted to the area encompassing the Himalayas, North-eastern India, Northern South- East Asia and South-western China. Several birds that are globally and regionally threatened occur throughout the country. Some bird species are listed in Schedule I of the Bhutan’s Forest and Nature conservation Act, 1995. Some of the key species presence in the country are; Rufous-necked Hornbill, Ward’s Trogon, Satyr Tragopan, Himalayan Monal, Beautiful Nuthatch, Yellow-rumped Honey Guide, Pallas Fish Eagle, Snow Pigeon, Long-billed Wren Babbler, White-bellied Heron, Black-necked Crane, Fire-tailed myzonis, Fire-tailed Sunbird, Grandala, Raven, Golden Bush Robin, Ibisbill and Blood Pheasant.

Botanical Tour

The country has a very diverse flora. Diversity of flora stretches from sub-tropical broadleaf to temperate and alpine meadow. Of the 5500 species of vascular plants, 750 are endemic to the Eastern Himalaya and 50 are endemic to Bhutan. Many plant species are of high conservation value such as Taxus baccata, Tecctona grandis which fetch high price in the international market. Many species are rare and endemic species for Bhutan. Several plant species are listed under Schedule I of Forest and Nature Conservation Act of Bhutan, 1995.

Animal Watching

Within the altitudinal range of the Bhutan Himalayas, one can distinguish three different ecological units with the typical mammalian fauna. High altitude fauna includes snow leopard, blue sheep, red panda, Tibetan antelope, takin, and Himalayan musk deer. The temperate zone includes grey langur, tiger, common leopard, goral, Serow, Himalayan black bear, red panda, sambar, and barking deer. Tiger, one-horned rhinoceros, pygmy hog, water buffalo, golden langur, gaur, clouded leopard, capped langur are some of the sub-tropical low land animals. Several species are globally or regionally threatened and some are listed in Schedule I of the Forest and Nature Conservation Act of Bhutan, 1995.
